Bertie Ahern and the Magic Briefcase

Once upon a time, a nice boy called Bertie was given a magic briefcase. It could change money into different amounts, and nobody knew how. The story began when another boy called Michael came to visit his pal Bertie.

Michael put UK£30,000 into the magic briefcase, and gave it to Bertie. Both of the pals thought it still contained UK£30,000. Actually, it now contained just over UK£28,620 plus some pence. Neither of them noticed the coins that made up the extra pence, because it was a magic briefcase. >>>

Bertie gave the magic briefcase to another pal, Celia. She brought it to the bank, and they gave her IR£28,772.90 in exchange for the UK£ in the briefcase. The bank did not notice that they had received less than UK£2,000 in total that day, because it was a magic briefcase.

Also, the magic briefcase had changed Michael’s original UK£30,000 into an odd amount of Sterling (including some pence), that exactly equalled US$45,000. If Celia had given the bank US$45,000 (and somebody did that day), then she would have received the exact same IR£28,772.90 that she did for the Sterling!

‘This is a great magic briefcase’, laughed Bertie. ‘I think I will use it again and again!’
