Blem Over to Urban Dictionary

Paige Harrison at BlankPaige is asking Dubliners to blem over to Urban Dictionary, and give a thumbs up to defining ‘blem’ as ‘an exhortation to make a short, swift journey; e.g. will you blem down to the off-licence for me?’ At the moment, ‘blem’ has been hijacked by Londoners who think it is a cigarette. >>>

I’ve done that, but with one slight caveat. When I was growing up, to ‘blem’ meant to kick a football really hard, in the style of Peter Lorimer of Leeds or Joe Burke of Bohemians. Although I suppose that could be construed as an exhortation to the football to make a short, swift journey into the goal. So, fair enough then.

Incidentally, Urban Dictionary defines ‘Folly’ as ‘silly or dismissable as foolish’, as opposed to its correct meaning, which is to pursue somebody or support a football team. It does, however, define ‘Elephants’ as being very drunk and ‘Edgemacation’ as what you get in school.

But it has no definitions for any of the following important concepts:

  • ‘Arthuritis’ (Inflammation of the joints)
  • ‘Circling over Shannon’ (to be very drunk)
  • ‘Motrified’ (to be very embarrassed)
  • ‘Skarla’ (to be quite embarrassed)
  • ‘Thrun’ (past tense of to throw)

Anyways, blem over there and sort the other thing, right?
