Fishy Claims of Slimming Pills that Soak up Fat

Update: This advert for Plavsa has now been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland. For more details please click here or else read comment number 120 at the end of this post.

Plavsa Advert

According to a full page ad in this Sunday’s Irish Mail magazine, a ‘Dr. Slausberg from the University of Gotenberg (Sweden)’ has discovered ‘Plavsa, the slimming capsule that soaks up fat’. I have asked the Advertising Authority of Ireland to investigate the claims made for this and related products.

According to the hard-to-find Dr. Slausberg, Plavsa occurs naturally in fish, ‘which is why you never see a fat sea animal.’ I assume the good doctor has never seen a whale. Or a walrus. Or a seal. The ad also says that Plavsa ‘stimulates your digestive system by rapidly eliminating the binded fat molecules’, which sounds to me like a fancy way of saying that it makes you shit a lot more quickly than normal. So, more like a laxative than a slimming pill, perhaps?

The ad then points us to a website,, where the claims get even fishier. >>>

The Busy Dr. Slausberg

A quick look around reveals another slimming pill discovered by the prolific Dr. Slausberg. Coincidentally, despite coming from apples instead of fish, Dr. Slausberg’s Lypofene works in exactly the same way as his Plavsa: it dissolves your fatty tissue and eliminates it from your body.

And also promotes a third ‘pill that soaks up fat’. Lyposorb is promoted with the same sales pitch as Plavsa (‘have you ever seen overweight fish? Of course not, because their bodies contain Lyposorb’.) Strangely, it is not Dr. Slausberg that is promoting this fishy secret. Instead, it is a Dr. Nielsberg!

Similar Endorsements

Coincidentally, the pills are endorsed by two happy slimmers, of the same age and weight loss, using the same language. For Lypofene, ‘Elizabeth McCauley (33), who lost 4 stone in 5 months’ says: ‘I am so happy that Dr. Slausberg has revealed this secret.’ And for Lyposorb, ‘Catherine Kelly (33), who lost 4 stone in 5 months’ says: ‘I am so happy that Dr. Nielsberg has revealed this secret.’

So here is a quick overview. It seems that the elusive Dr. Slausberg discovered Plavsa in fish, and he also discovered Lypofene in apples. Both of these products ‘soak up fat’ (and may, incidentally, make you shit more quickly). So does Lyposorb, which like Plavsa comes from fish and not apples, but this was discovered by a Dr. Nielsberg instead of Dr. Slausberg. Pay attention at the back!

Who is Behind this Advert?

  • The Irish address for Plavsa is 1 Limekiln Close, Terenure, Dublin 6. The Irish orderline is 01 6530765.
  • Apart from ads for the above products, a Google search returned no information on the elusive Doctors Slausberg and Nielsberg.
  • is registered to Health First Marketing Ltd, 133 New Bridge Road 10-06, China Town Point, Singapore.
  • The administrative and billing contact is Choices Wild UK Ltd, a web development and hosting company in Middlesex, whose other projects include and (coming soon!)
  • The print advert says that Plavsa is ‘approved by the International Obesity Society’. A Google search for this group finds this page on Answerbank, in which a poster says they received a promotion for Lyposorb, with the Choices Wild address in Middlesex, this time with a Dr. Spitzer endorsing it.

How to Complain

I have asked the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland to investigate the claims made in these ads under the following clauses in their Code of Standards:

  • 2.10-2.12 regarding the use of statistics and technical data;
  • 2.22 regarding honesty and 2.24-2.26 regarding truthfulness;

I have tried these Plavsa capsules since June 2007, when I first saw them in the papers. They are just GREAT. I have since lost 1 stone and do take them regularly to maintain the weight. Good idea to have something I can take when I go out for a meal like pizza. I would recommend any one who really wants to lose that extra bit of weight to try the Plavsa.

I gave two to my goldfish ‘cos he was looking a bit bloated. Apart from becoming more aggressive, I’ve not noticed much difference in his body mass index. Mind you I now have to clean the tank twice a day.

  • 3. Michael Nugent  |  July 18, 2007 at 4:49 pm

That could be dangerous. Given that the Plavsa supposedly comes from fish, you may have triggered off some cannibalistic trauma in your goldfish. And, when you next clean the tank, he could mistake your fingers for fish fingers, and attack like a shoal of pirhanna. It might be safer to give him the pills that are made from apples

  • 4. lorraine  |  July 21, 2007 at 7:11 pm

  • 5. Twenty Major  |  July 22, 2007 at 12:06 am

I too am using Plavsa but I have put on 6 stone in less than three weeks. The things might burn fat but they make me very fucking hungry.

  • 6. amanda  |  July 22, 2007 at 4:21 pm

i’m so glad i decided to research this “plavsa” product… in an effort to lose weight the way this ad describes itself as natural is indeed tempting… what put me off is the too obvious “dr. slausberg” it seemed a little “fishy”. thankfully i came across your site and will not be buying this product. i don’t fancy running to the loo all day every day to lose a few pounds!!! thanks again

  • 7. Too good to be true  |  July 22, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Enzo must be very pleased with the product. He left the same message, word for word, on a website called 3fatchicks!!!!!!!!

  • 8. joanne  |  July 23, 2007 at 7:28 pm

    Fingers x

  • 9. Very Very Messy  |  July 23, 2007 at 9:54 pm

I wonder if they could start giving them out free in supermacs there’s a fair few people in Ireland that could do with them now especially the ignorant fat irish women. Roll on the foreign fishs without the sex in the city bullshit we have to listen to for a shite ride at the end of it…lads try out the foreign women spend your money there you’ll lose loads of weight not only off your shoulders!!!

  • 10. maggie  |  July 24, 2007 at 11:45 am

  • 11. maria.  |  July 24, 2007 at 2:20 pm

i was going to buy plavsa. i had a baby 6 months ago and findin it ard to shift the weight. but fter reading the comments above i’ll think twice. can anybody change my mind?

  • 12. lorraine  |  July 25, 2007 at 4:57 pm

Hi maria and the others, i have been on plavsa now for 3 weeks, before i mentioned i lost about 4 pounds but it seems to have stoped, iam still at 11 stone 8 pounds, i myself personally iam going to stop taking them, and go back to the one i was on before trim secrets, you have to follow a diet plan on these, of 3 reg meals a day but they give you a boost of energy after a week of taking them, that allows you to work that fat away, i was on thses before, but when your in a rush to lose those few pounds your enclined to look for the other options, i find walking helps on these you can buy these in your health stores as well, they cost 24euro for a month supply.

  • 13. KATE  |  July 25, 2007 at 5:31 pm

Just been reading all your comments on Plavsa. I called the orderline and was told €38.00 for 60. This is only 10 days supply at 6 per day. Much better to cut down on the junk food and a little more exercise. All the money you save could give you a nice weekend away. Won’t be be purchasing Plavsa.

  • 14. tom  |  July 25, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Tried the four week course and lost 4lbs. Don’t think this was through the tablets, but rather through the change of lifestyle. Definetly did shit a lot more, I have however found a completely natural slimmimng. It’s called diet and excercise and so far, seems to be working. I would recommend this to a friend.

  • 15. keith  |  July 26, 2007 at 9:19 am

Have people not learn yet any thing outside the E.U. has not been tested and if it is, its us they are testing it out on. Bottom line is if you want to lose weight, exercise a little and stay away from bread and any flour based products (ie) biscuits bars and cakes. Garuteen to lose weight and improves your sex life.

  • 16. melissa  |  July 27, 2007 at 12:09 pm

oh i am just so dissapointed now ive ordered 2 boxes through my local chemist and couldnt wait for them to arrive now its like im not bovered!!! they dont seem to be giving the miriacle weight loss they claim so far.
damn that sales assistant she should have known!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 17. lisa  |  July 27, 2007 at 2:22 pm

ive just pre ordered from my chemist this morning, ive lost 2 stone since january eating healthly and lots of walking but just cant shift the last half stone, i was going to try plavsa but after reading the above comments i will just stick to the walking, sounds like they are just a waste of money.

  • 18. ellen duricin  |  July 29, 2007 at 11:05 pm

cheers, was thinking of trying these but now im not gonna waiste my money no more as the weight is coming off easy thanks to the chemical diet, losing nearly half stone every few days and taking 1-2 days off between, should be my target weight in few weeks after having my baby few months ago.. breakfast of half grapefruit, black coffee or tea, lunch of two boiled eggs and green beans, dinner of 8 ounses of steak , half cup tomateos, lettuce, 1 apple, season with salt , pepper, vineger, only. drink lots of water, repeat, but take a day or two off between, good luck, its seriously works.

  • 19. Gerrie  |  July 31, 2007 at 10:43 am

Was going to try but after reading all the comments will definately give it a miss.

  • 20. ell30  |  August 1, 2007 at 4:36 pm

hey have been taking plavsa for 10 days now and have not lost any weight, very disappointing, i have noticed that i’m a bit dizzy sometimes and tired and a bit headachey, has anyone else noticed any of these symptoms?

  • 21. Kit  |  August 3, 2007 at 10:55 am

Yes I have noticed that I am very tired and I have had the odd headache. I find they have supressed my appetite, I dont feel I am eating as much. I ahve only been on them for 4 days now and I have lost 1.5 pounds. I think they are to good to good to eb true though. Ithought that they were goign to work miracles but Im now beginging to think it all crap, like everythiny else I suppose.

  • 22. ell30  |  August 4, 2007 at 9:50 am

after 2 weeks taking them now i’ve stopped as i’m dizzy a lot of the time and generly dont like the way i’m feeling at the moment, i could put up with this for a while if i felt i was losing weight but i’ve actually put on 2 pounds while taking them and its not cause i’m eating more as i’m eating a lot less as they do supress your appitite a bit so alas its back to the gym unfortunatly there is no easy way to lose weight and if its seems too good to be true it usually is !!

  • 23. Nuala  |  August 7, 2007 at 11:22 am

Ladies I ordered this product yesterday and tried to cancel today after reading your comments and the company is very reluctant to give me my money back. I have been sent on a merry go round and after hanging on the phone for half and hour am told I will be not be charged after stating I was on medication and it may be detremental to my health to have side effects as stated above. My partner was in the forces for years and says the only way to stay fit is to eat ‘ lots of healthy’ food and excercise. He says it’s the ‘elexir of youth’. I think I’ll take his advice. So bye bye Mars bars, ice cream and the general ‘pigging out’ we women do.

  • 24. michelle  |  August 7, 2007 at 10:51 pm

i have just started taking these on my second week. lost 3 pounds.. do find that I am quite hungry in the nite. after having my 3 meals as normal.. i’m not going to the toilet any more that normal..

im going to try the month and see how it goes..

I think you should allways try something once

  • 25. Trish  |  August 8, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Ordered Plavsa over 3 weeks ago following seeing the ad in a Sunday Newspaper. Immediately my credit card was debited but I still haven’t received goods. Rang them numerous times & was told that the floods in England have affected delivery!! Emailed too but still no reply. Seem like both a dodgy organisation as well as the product.

  • 26. lizzy  |  August 8, 2007 at 2:58 pm

I have tried this product. i dont think it is the pill that is making me lose weight though. It makes me go to the toilet a lot more but i could take a Laxitive if i wanted that. (cheaper). It says it must be taken as part of a calorie controlled diet and excercise. You dont have to be a scientist or doctor to figure that out. i will finish the month and see. After reading this page though i think it is a bit dodgy.

  • 27. elaine  |  August 8, 2007 at 9:55 pm

I wish i would have come across this site 3 weeks ago, like trish i ordered them when i saw the ad in a sunday magazine. i haven’t recieved them either, was on the phone to them today and was told i’d have them by the end of the week. my credit card was debited straight away too. so to anybody reading this i would really think twice as i’m realising it’s all a big farse

  • 28. Lianne  |  August 9, 2007 at 12:40 pm

I have been using these the past month and i have lost 5lbs. I only take them if there is any fat in my meals… i wouldnt take them before a breakfast cereal!!
Seem to work – so far so good 🙂

  • 29. judz  |  August 9, 2007 at 12:50 pm

i think enzo is havin a bit of a laugh i saw the same comment about these pills in another 2 websites so far ive a feeling its dr slausberg in diguise!

  • 30. Michael Nugent  |  August 9, 2007 at 1:12 pm

Or perhaps it is the other way around – maybe the hard-to-find Dr Slausberg is Enzo in disguise?

  • 31. Babz  |  August 11, 2007 at 11:43 pm

Just started pills today. I’m a bit optimistic after reading comments but I’ll give it a whirl. In the past I have lost a couple of stone on Lipotrim but its V strict, and having a 6 mth old baby I’m finding it hard to go back on it. So I hope Plavsa works for me, I’ll keep U posted X

  • 32. Jade  |  August 12, 2007 at 9:22 am

Llike everything these product depend on the person also. What might work for someone might not for someone else so the best thing to do is to make up your own mind. I bought these and I’m going to give it a go. If it doesn’t work at least I tried it.Will let you know how I get on.

  • 33. Marie  |  August 12, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Just completed my first week and lost 7lbs. Totally delighted, yes I have tried to be careful what I eat no sweets, cake or crisps but I feel great. For all those cynics even if it is mind over matter who cares if the results are forthcoming. P.S. I have never tried anything like this before.

  • 34. Bernadette Quinlan  |  August 12, 2007 at 7:38 pm

I have been taking Plasva for the past 3 Wks and I dont seem to be losing any weight.

  • 35. amanda  |  August 12, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Hi I have been taking these a few days and I must say I don`t feel as hungry as usually,so I will keep all posted how I get on!hopefully loose a few pounds around my waist!!!

  • 36. Naomi  |  August 13, 2007 at 2:34 pm

I was actually trying to find these pills!my fiancee and i are getting married in 5 weeks and wanted to shift a couple of lbs before the wedding – advert in the magazine said you could find it in your pharmacy, but we looked in several and couldn’t find it so came online to try look for it and found this site!Boy am I glad I did! I can’t believe that it’s so expensive.I have to agree with the girl who pointed out that sea animals like walrus, seals and whales have a significant amount of blubber, I actually mentioned it to my fiancee when I read the advert, but we were going to give it a try anyway – definitly not going to bother now!I like the way it tells you that it will work in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and excercise – sure if we stuck to a calorie controlled diet and exercise alone we’d lose weight – think we’ll just go for that option now – the exercise is free and sticking to a calorie controlled diet will save us money rather than forking out so much for some rendered fish bits!!!

  • 37. Nuala  |  August 16, 2007 at 9:12 pm

See previous entry above under Nuala. When I cancelled the order they said they would refund the money. I check the bank statement today and they have deducted €67 for the pills. There is no honour amongst thieves. I think the whole idea is just a cash cow for a rich twit who plays on people’s insecurities.

  • 38. jennie  |  August 17, 2007 at 5:12 pm

i just recieved mine this morning i did think it would work nieve i know. ahh well i have them now may as well try them i will let u know how i get on.

  • 39. Tonia  |  August 20, 2007 at 11:46 am

i have been taking plavsa the past 2 weeks and lost only 3 and half pound, now mon-fri i have been going out on fast walks for hour and a half and eating very health and low fat, calorie, carb, etc…. and all i lost was 3 pound,,, BUT I WAS TAKING PLASVA AT THE SAME TIME???

il continue taking them and see how it goes because it says 1 month recommended so hopefully a miracle happens at the end of the month!

  • 40. lizzy  |  August 21, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Please please please do not waste your money on these tablets. Useless… completely. Somebody on another forum said Trim Secrets are a good diet pill and they are supposed to be much cheaper.

  • 41. Aisling  |  August 21, 2007 at 5:48 pm

My mum just bought a jar of these nd if it works 4 her i might try it out. Id say its all physiological – a laxative-like product + determination = weightloss? Who knows…

  • 42. Aisling  |  August 21, 2007 at 5:52 pm

    oops sorry meant psychological

  • 43. blankpaige  |  August 21, 2007 at 6:05 pm

Goldfish is now making cider out of the apple product. He’s run an effluent waste pipe along side the air intake. Cleaning the tank is now a right bitch. I’m going to deep fry he and his side kick tonight with a single of greasy chips.

  • 44. maggie  |  August 23, 2007 at 7:29 pm

i have been taking them for 3 weeks and i have lost 21 pounds hurray

  • 45. Tonia  |  August 24, 2007 at 11:43 am

MAGGIE plavsa is not doing much for me, can you tell me how many tablets you are taking a day? jus incase i need to take more, somethimes ill only have 2 a day if food is fatty.

  • 46. Tonia  |  August 24, 2007 at 11:48 am

Dr. sausbierg who invented plavsa also brought out Lypofene® ACV and it says the same on the box as plavsa and same content, weird!!!
I think he is a gimmick! and he doesnt even have a website or any info on him!!

  • 47. Tommy  |  August 25, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Just went online to order as per that Sunday mag ad, no way I’ll buy this stuff now. Thanks for saving me that money, think I’ll get my gym membership back in order.

  • 48. Siobhan  |  August 28, 2007 at 2:18 pm

Hi I have taken plavsa for the last month, I did lose weight but I was also going through a very stressful time so not sure the pills were the reason for the weight loss… don’t think I will bother with ordering anymore especially after reading all your comments thank you!

  • 49. Kate  |  August 29, 2007 at 12:36 pm

Who do I believe??? I’ve read all of the comments and some of them are making me dizzy!! Does anyone think the pills might make us all ill? I’d like them to work but I’ve got doubts now. I have had no runs to the toilet, not hungry or faint. I’ve been on them for a week.

  • 50. Tonia  |  August 29, 2007 at 3:01 pm

HI KATE , i have been on them the past 3 weeks, lost 4 pound but i have been on a low colarie diet and walking everynight of the week, i think the tablets are a sham!! i didnt need to go toilet either!! such a waist,
but i do know that lipotrim works my work mate lost 7 pound on first week she only wanted to lose something like a stone so she was taking lipotrim for nearly two weeks and she lost all that stone, so yesh lipotrim works but i think plavsa dont, i stopped taking them a few days ago but i think ill finish of the bottle for the sake of it anyway jus incase but really this going to the toilet thing is not happening to me and thats how you lose the weight as they say, because it flushs the fat out of you,

    thumbs down for mr plavsa

  • 51. Angie  |  September 1, 2007 at 9:21 am

I have been taking Plavsa for over two weeks now and have not lost any weight. Over the last few days I have been extremely dizzy and unwell. After reading this page I am sorry that I didn’t check this site out before I bought them. I am stopping today. I am going on Weight Watchers as I think its much safer, there is no quick fix to weight loss!!

  • 52. Jacinta  |  September 1, 2007 at 6:30 pm

I have been taking them but think I’m gonna have to stop now – started to take them 2 weeks ago lost 5lb but no sign of my period over 6 days late now – did anyone else experience this I’m hoping its just a stress thing – any suggestions

  • 53. Joanna  |  September 5, 2007 at 12:26 am

There is no way I’m going to buy these now as they sound useless. V disappointed as I have 3 and a half stone to lose. Better with healthy diet and daily exercise eg: brisk walking. It’s just that my determination levels and willpower are crap which is why I’ve put this all on in the past year. Any advice on maintaining willpower?

  • 54. Tonia  |  September 5, 2007 at 9:56 am

i have started lipotrim on my 3rd day now , i lost 3 pound since monday,,, really !! look up lipotrim forums and u;ll see how good they are !!!!!!!!!!

  • 55. ROBERT B  |  September 9, 2007 at 10:29 pm

I have read all the comments on these slimming products.

In 4 weeks I’m now down to 14st 1lb So summats happining. And I feel a lot more lively. So now I have sent for more.

  • 56. Tonia  |  September 10, 2007 at 12:58 pm

hi all just finished my first week on lipotrim i lost 8 pound, honestly, go on the lipotrim discussions and you’ll see how good they are, Plavsa were shit for me, sorry but they do not work, and this forum says it all.

  • 57. DM  |  September 11, 2007 at 1:45 pm

Hello all I have read the above and I agree with Rob I think it is hit and miss. I did lipotrim and lost 2.5 stone but believe me unless you change your eating it comes back after a small period of time. diet is the key also lipotrim is fairly expensive I think it was 80-90 euro a week…

  • 58. Ted  |  September 11, 2007 at 2:21 pm

I am so happy that Dr. Slausberg has revealed his secret. However, I never asked him the question.

  • 59. Tonia  |  September 11, 2007 at 3:25 pm

    what do you mean ted?

  • 60. shel  |  September 12, 2007 at 11:03 pm

  • 61. bex  |  September 15, 2007 at 7:13 pm

just for anybody who is interested,a few years ago there was an ad for a product called BONSAL,it is the same description as plavsa, even has the same testimonials,i would say look it up before you think about buying this fishy product, because if its the same product, why did they change the name..

  • 62. Fiodhna  |  September 24, 2007 at 7:13 pm

wow… after reading about the tablets in the Sunday Tribune yesterday i was enthralled and had intended to buy them today however after reading these comments and the above article i think i’ll give them a miss. too dodgy for my liking tbh.

  • 63. Tracey  |  September 25, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Oh my god i’ve just bought them!!! dont know what to do now. said i’d google them and see if theyre really the miracle i’ve been looking for. they were only €27 in my local pharmacy and thats for 60 so i suppose i’ll give it a whirl!! will keep you posted

  • 67. mary elizabeth  |  September 30, 2007 at 6:11 pm

try googling the warrior diet. i really eat like a friggin’ pig sometimes and at least with this one i can still eat like that. seriously if you stick to what it says to do and go to your health food store to get some eostrogen blockers you will lose wieght rather quickly.the website will tell you what to get or you can just buy the creators supplements. i just get the stuff from the health food store. you don’t have to give up up anything really either because honestly, we all know that shit never works anyway.

Checked out BONSAL after reading what bex had said on 15th sept. Well spotted too. The 2 ads are virtually identical. the only differences i can see other than the name is the doc is now carl mayer of the university of zurich and the testimonial ladies names have changed. this is some pile of shit, surely not legal?

  • 69. polly  |  September 30, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Hey, Just readin the comments. Thanks for saving me the hassle with Plavsa. I have tried Lipotrim and YES it does work but my jaws went into shock not being allowed to chew. Drinking milk shakes nearly drove me spare so I gave up. Back to where I started and am now going to investigate Lipotrim. Thanks for the tip and best of luck everyone. Hope we all find the bodies we’re looking for.

Just came accross this site and I am glad that I have as I was going to buy this product. I live in Limerick and have seen all the hype on the papers, so I went to the Alternative health shop in Limerick to price the product last Friday the 28 th of September and I was told that it would cost me euro 39.95 but they had none in stock at the time, however when I rang the store today the had the product in stock but it had increased in price to 49.99 a difference of 10 euros in 2 days. A total rip off!! people stay well clear of it. The old fashioned way is always the best. I find Weight Watchers the best and have lost two stone on the points plan.

Has anyone heard of ACOMPLIA? It’s a form of Rimonabant & is used to treat obesity. It is approved here & in Europe but not in the US.

  • 74. dee  |  October 3, 2007 at 3:00 pm

just to let ye people know, iv been taken plavsa for over a week now, while i am following a healthy eating plan and walking every day all i lost was ONE POUND, very dissappointed, but have the months supply so am gonna finish it out but im not expecting any miracles…. to b honest i think its a big money scam, to the lady who said she couldnt get it in the chemists it is only sold in unicare chemists…. good luck to anyone who is gonna try it but i wouldnt hold my breath…………

  • 75. Joanne  |  October 6, 2007 at 12:51 pm

  • 76. Checkerboard Cowboy  |  October 7, 2007 at 8:59 pm

I just saw the ad in the paper. Plasva is this thing: the dishonest thing.

Any eejit can tell you why fish aren’t that fat. It’s because they don’t stuff themselves at McDonalds every day. Duh.

Maybe Plasva gives a little psychological boost, but for me, I’ll stick with my dodgey ab trainer and Tesco brand weightlifting kit. 😉

Hi there I’ve been reading the comments above and would like to offer some general advice:

FIrstly if you are over 16stone and are having problems losing weight you should consult your doctor and they are obliged to offer you weight controlling drugs….proper clinically trialed drugs as described here

Secondly please read about each drug individually as all have there side effects. The most recent drug available in the Europe, UK & Ireland is this one

It would probably be the best one if the side effects might only occur in small percentages as with most drugs. Consulting with your doctor though and more independent research will help you decide.

Apart from that there is no substitute for exercise and eating right and this is the best method in the end with the most beneficial side effects…..exercise can become addictive and can make you feel good.

The other option and certainly the more expensive one is liposuction which is a very safe surgery. The downside of course is that you haven’t changed your habit and therefore you will grow the fat back, and you have not improved your health.

Apologies for the Wiki links but it was more convenient that medical journals and available free to all.

    Good Luck,

  • 95. cate ni riain  |  October 24, 2007 at 11:29 am

I lost 4 stone in 5 months on a product from Tony Quinn health store..called Amino – 0r / Energise. It is 100% natural, no drugs..

Only side effect is buying new clothes..wait until you reach your desired weight as I kept buying thinking that this was it but no I lost bucket loads and loo trips were not ott as with plavsa.. which may only work for Pisceans..or merpeople..

  • 96. car  |  October 27, 2007 at 12:36 pm

Bought Plavsa back in October and took 4 perday, I didnt lose any weight and did not experience any side effects whatsoever. I do think the capsule could have been filled with talcum powder for all the difference it made! My local health store claim they don’t promote it, as unlike Chitosan, Plavsa depletes all fats from the body including the good ones such as omega 3 and essential fats!! Plavsa did not shift 1 ounce of fat good or bad………….

  • 97. joanne  |  October 27, 2007 at 5:11 pm

Hi all, I took those Plavsa tabs back in July for a month and didnt lose a thing but BE WARNED ……THEY STOPPED MY PERIODS and as soon as i stopped taking the tabs my periods returned to normal! I also got spots on my stomach area! I reckon anything that can stop your periods like that is extremely dodgy so i recommend to STAY AWAY from Plavsa

    Hi Guys,
I have been taking Plavsa for just over a month and have gone from 12st to 11st no word of a lie. I couldnt believe it, it was so easy. I ate exactly what i did before and changed nothing about my lifestyle. Everyone has noticed the difference in me. I think its very true to stick it for the 4 wks cos you will really see the difference and cant believe that they are reasonably priced. Ive read unsuccessful stories but maybe they affect people differently i dunno but they have definatley worked for me so I would highly recommend them ;o)

  • 107. crazybitch  |  November 8, 2007 at 10:30 am

  • 108. Sarah Kenna  |  November 8, 2007 at 11:30 am

I have been taken the tablets for a month now and have lost a stone. In saying that I would’nt say it’s down to the Plasva, as I have cut all the crap out.
I also don’t find that I need to go to the toiliet more. Maybe we feel better about spending money on diet pills to stick to a diet…. ither way I do find the advertisement is very misleading and Plasva should’nt be sold in pharmacys until their approved.

  • 109. Elizabeth  |  November 8, 2007 at 3:52 pm

I’ve been getting my plasva tablets in the Ultimate Health Clinic in Limerick for the last 2 weeks, they only charge €30 for 60 capsules (the cheapest and best around) you dont just get tablets handed over counter like other places, they give you advice and information on healthy eating. They take a personal interest in each individual and they watch your progress on a week-week basis. The girls are brilliant and motivate you, they are very professional but extremely friendly. So i would recommended anyone to contact the Ultimate Health Clinic. They also have clinic in Athy, Kildare and Ratoath, Meath so no excuses! They specialize in Colonic Hydrotherapy and I’m just after having my first session with them, which will guarantee me to lose weight and feel great! Amazing!

  • 110. David  |  November 10, 2007 at 3:03 pm

I’ve been working in community pharmacy now since 1979. In that time I’ve seen loads of “wonder” weight loss products come and go. There has yet to be one to last the course. The claims have been from fat dissolving , fat binding, metabolism boosting to meal replacement. As outlined above they are all based on flaky pseudo-science. They all seem to be based on “getting the most money from gullible punters” principle.
A lot of people are looking for an easy answer to all of their problems, weight loss included. They are ready to believe the “Take this tablet and you will lose weight” ads. Life ain’t that easy.
Eat less and healthy and exercise more, that’s the secret. You can send your €20 notes to me at the above address. 🙂
There are some appetite suppressants available on prescription but they are not suitable for everybody and are only for a short while. When you finish them you still have to deal with your pre-existing eating habits.

How is the weight loss going now? Have you lost anymore? Im going to start them tomorrow…

  • 119. Emma  |  December 10, 2007 at 1:00 am

I took Plavsa during the summer and lost half a stone…was really happy with them. Though at the same time i gave up sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks. Have started to take them again with no results. AT ALL. Conclusion….Plavsa doesn’t work…cutting out the fatty foods does. I would suggest kepping a diary of what you eat every day for a normal week (if it passed my lips it gets written down, that included drinks), I didn’t realise how much junk I was eating til I gave it up. Which was hard but I feel and look better now. As a rule il never “treat” myself two days running and it can only be one small thing. That way I’m never too restricted.

PS: Am a bit more hungry and definately noticed I’m goin to the loo more often while on them.
PPS: I’ve heard diet drinks make you gain more weight because the sweetener in them upsets your biochemistry and you gain weight more easily because of that.

Update – Advert for Plavsa Slimming Pills is Now Banned

Since I published this post in July, it has consistently been the most-read and most-commented-on post on That’s Ireland.

The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland has now upheld the complaints against this advert, and has told the advertisers not to make these claims again until full substantiation has been submitted to and verified by the Authority.

I also investigated this product further since July, and sent the following new information to the ASAI before they decided on the matter:

    * The advert is one of several related adverts that use identical wording for seemingly the same product under different brand names, stretching at least as far back as 2000 in the USA.

    * The supposed inventor of Plavsa is bogus. There is no Doctor Slausberg at the University of Gothenburg, and no record of him in their marine-related theses from as far back as 1960.

    * The testimonials in the Plavsa advert are bogus. They repeat word-for-word, using different names, testimonials from related adverts in other countries, one as old as 2002.

    * The active ingredient in Plavsa is chitosan, which has a controversial history as a slimming aid, including a different company making a $10m settlement for deceptive advertising in the USA.

I have posted the full story about what I discovered here.

  • 121. lj  |  December 18, 2007 at 9:47 am

Lads, try Pu-ehr tea, Robt Roberts product in most supermarkets or the puehr tea in teh chinese emporium in town. Its really good three cups a day and its only the price of normal tea.
i find it really good, it stops you from putting on weight when your bold and helps you lose weight faster when your good.

  • 122. denise  |  January 6, 2008 at 9:33 pm

my husband and i are about to start the tablets tomorrow i have been going to slimming world for eight weeks now and have lost over two stone eating as much as i like of free food of the right choices and i would recomend it to anyone but thought i would try also taking plavsa to boost my weight loss but if it doesnt work well at least i still have my slimming class which i would not give up for love or money and believe me i have tried every weight loss programme and pill from private health farms to doctors prescriptions and only slimming world have worked.

  • 123. fiona  |  January 7, 2008 at 1:33 pm

im am thinking of buying these plasva today. as i have put on weight and want to loss it. diets just do not do it for me. and there is so many different opionions on these tablets. is there any one with positive feedback. and does it make you go to the loo more often and is there any side affects. like diarrhae?

  • 124. fiona  |  January 7, 2008 at 1:41 pm

where can i buy these amino tablets or chitosan tablets. is there any where in wicklow? as these sound good too. and to all the others about the price of the plasva. all sam mcauleys stock these and costs 29.99euro.

  • 125. paul  |  January 14, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Hi people, was going to buy this product but after reading all the comments above decided not to. I know how i gained weight, lack of exercise and eating and drinking the wrong foods. So i guess the best way to lose it is to turn the tables and do more exercise and eat the right healthy foods and drink lots of water. its as simple as that. I would like to wish everyone of you who are trying to lose weight the best of luck and remember you can do it.

  • 126. SALLY  |  January 15, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Wish I had read this before!! Bought a thirty day supply last week and was hoping that I would be strutting around in a tiny bikini in June! Feck it any way.

  • 127. Marie  |  January 18, 2008 at 11:15 am

I’ve been on Plavsa for about a week now. Definately felt slimmer but no budge on the scales! It was probably just pschological weight loss! I have been going to the loo a lot more, not happy about that as I have IBS and this is irritating it further. Think I’m gonna stop, am scared about all the comments I’ve read on this forum. Pity, coz I’m getting married in June and really wanted to shift 3 stone. Have tried to exercise and eat healthily for the last year but find it very hard to stick to – oh well, will try again. Good luck to all of you in your weight-loss endeavours!

  • 128. Evelyn  |  January 20, 2008 at 12:35 am

Hey. I started taking Plavsa in November. I didn’t really notice any weight loss for the first 2 weeks but I didn’t gain anything either even though I had a few take outs. Since then I have lost 8lbs. I had no side effects at all. I did not change my diet while on Plavsa so I really think they worked for me.

  • 129. Patrick  |  January 20, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Well, the ad is back in today’s Mail on Sunday, despite the fact that it’s banned.

  • 130. Michael Nugent  |  January 21, 2008 at 12:31 am

Patrick – yes, the ad is back. They have slightly changed the wording.

    See details here.

I’ll be checking with the Advertising Standards Authority about this tactic and I’ll post more when I get a response.

  • 131. Deirdre  |  February 10, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Hi there, I have bought 4 packs of Plasva, been taking them for 2 weeks, and have no weight loss. With all the comments I am thinking that I should stop taking them. However, some people say that you only notice the weight loss after a month on Plasva. Can anyone support this. And if not, can we not get our money back from anywhere…… Maybe we are stupid buying these things, but there should be some come back if they are a scam>>>

  • 132. john  |  February 14, 2008 at 12:55 pm

I wrote to ASAI about the fact the poster is on display in a chemist window. They replied

” I refer to your recent email dated 04th February 2008 concerning point-of-sale posters displayed for Plavsa in the window of a chemist.

The function of the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland is to promote the highest standards of advertising and to enforce the Code of Standards for Advertising, Promotional and Direct Marketing in Ireland.

For the purposes of the Code, an advertisement is defined as a paid-for communication in which the advertiser purchases space in an advertising medium (e.g. newspaper, magazine, radio, television, etc.) to communicate a commercial message. Point-of-sale material would not normally be regarded as an advertisement for the purposes of the Code and would therefore be outside the jurisdiction of ASAI.

Although we are not in a position to pursue your complaint under the Code, we appreciate that you took the trouble to write to us in this case. ”

    Kindest Regards

    ASAI Secretariat

  • 133. John Wiliams  |  March 21, 2008 at 4:24 pm

The advert is still on the chemist window. The ASAI told me they had sent a copy of their report to the chemist

  • 134. mary  |  March 28, 2008 at 3:10 pm

tried it for 3 weeks and lost 2 dress sizes

  • 135. John Wiliams  |  April 22, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Further to my post 133 on March 21 2008 I can now confirm the poster has been taken down from that chemist. I have a photo of it when it was up.

The ASA told me they have no power over point of sale ads but would be writing to the chemist, enclosing a copy of the ruling as far as I can recall.

I note it has also been taken down from another local chemist which is a Unicare branch

tried it for 6 weeks and i am very disappointed with the out come, i lost only 1 pound, i feel as though these pills are a good source of fibre, i also feel that they get rid of the bloated feeling but they did nothing for weight at all, i wouldn’t advise anyone to buy them, they are hopeless

  • 138. lauriee  |  May 30, 2008 at 10:54 pm

There are very little comments saying how good these diet pills were. The few that there is, i think it is DR.Slausburg in disguise. Plavsa has given me great HOPE, but, now I guess all that hope is lost:(

i used plasva pills for a few months, and they did’nt do a thing for me. just another crap useless product on the market!

I came across a fat fighter called slimlike recently, and in that website they actually show you the evidence the proof that it does work.

Why dont all the other weight loss sites show the evidence the proof, if it works there should be evidence or proof, what have they got to hide, makes sense right?

Hey i took plavsa when they first came out in about March 2007 they worked brill for me took them for 2 weeks and the weight just vanished. Stopped taking them a few months later and slowly but surely the weight piled back on i am now at my heavievst at 13 stone but i am also taking hrt. I am only 20 so i believe that the HRT is making me pile on the weight dont get me wrong i have a very sweet tooth lol… Started taking plavsa again for the 3rd or 4th time and they are doing nothing for me.. pure waste of money. I believe they make you lose the weight the first time round but they dont have the same effect 3rd or 4th time round… Just finished my plavsa today and i have lost nothing. Looks like im back to the drawing board again.. has anyone actually tried anything that has worked would be really interessed in hearing how you got on..

naturally like your web site but you need to check the spelling on quite a few of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to tell the reality on the other hand I will certainly come again again.

You actually make it seem so easy along with your
presentation but I find this topic to be actually something which I
believe I might never understand. It kind of feels too complicated
and extremely huge for me. I am looking ahead for
your subsequent publish, I will attempt to
    get the cling of it!

Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly
enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any tips for inexperienced blog writers? I’d certainly appreciate it.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear
and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off
topic but I had to tell someone!
