Conor Lenihan Worth More than Entire US Senate

Taking into account the relative populations of Ireland and the USA:

  • Bertie Ahern gets paid 80 times as much as George Bush
  • Willie O’Dea gets paid 80 times as much as Dick Cheney
  • Conor Lenihan gets paid more than the entire US Senate

Here is how much more the Irish Taoiseach gets paid, per head of population, than the Prime Ministers of ten other countries: >>>

Salaries as percentages of Population

Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern (salary €310,000; pop 4.1m) is worth:

  • 3 times more than the Norwegian PM (salary €122,000; pop 4.7m)
  • 4 times more than the Belgian PM (salary €192,000; pop 10.5m)
  • 7 times more than the Australian PM (salary €210,000; pop 20.4m)
  • 10 times more than the Dutch PM (salary €123,000; pop 16.5m)
  • 11 times more than the Slovakian PM (salary €39,000; pop 5.4m)
  • 17 times more than the British PM (salary €268,000; pop 60.5m)
  • 20 times more than the French PM (salary €240,000; pop 64.1m)
  • 24 times more than the German PM (salary €261,000; pop 82.3m)
  • 59 times more than the Polish PM (salary €49,500; pop 38.5m)
  • 81 times more than the US President (salary €279,000; pop 301.1m)

And Junior Minister for Silly Remarks Conor Lenihan (salary 165,000; pop 4.1m) is worth 105 times more than a US Senator (salary 115,000; pop 301.1m).

I don’t know. I just think it is too easy to complain about TD’s salaries. We’d a perfect opportunity to vote out this shower but didn’t and then again I’m sure that the opposition wouldn’t have refused such a largesse if they were in power.

More interesting comparison is that we think it okay to pay a man with no experience 400,000 to be Ireland Manager (what is it, 14 games of football a year and he doesn’t even get to pick who’d be in his team) and another 200,000 to a senile old man who occasionally says “Yes, Stan, you are quite correct” but baulk at paying our leader anything near a commercially competitive rate.

I don’t know how many 100,000’s we pay Gerry Ryan to bore the arse of us on national radio.

Nor, it is fan-diddly-eye-tastic to be Oirish!

Paige, I agree that the salaries in the entertainment world are bizarre compared to politics, but even in the fields that you mention, Ireland is way down the pecking order of salaries.

Compare Staunton’s remuneration with Sven Goran Erikson, who was on a £4.5m salary as coach of England, and his compensation package was about £6m. Even Steve McClaren, the current England coach, is on about £2.5m.

Or compare Gerry Ryan, on whatever he makes, to something like his US equivalent, Howard Stern, who is reported to make over US$30m a year.

Bigger markets provide bigger revenue, which provide bigger profits, which provide bigger salaries, in every field except politics, where somehow Bertie Ahern is the highest-paid Prime Minister in the democratic world.
