On this week last year (November 5 to November 11, 2006):

  • In the past three years, had Irish people become taller or smaller on average, had we become fatter or thinner on average, and by how much?
  • How many of us were on a diet, and how many hours a day did we spend sitting down (at work or at home)?
  • What domestic product, which would increase our sitting-down-time, dropped in price from about €11,000 to under €3,000 in time for Christmas?
  • What new trick were Irish shoplifters using to make money without shoplifting?
  • Transparency International published its annual list of perceived corruption in different countries. Where did Ireland come in the list, and what was our honesty rating in marks out of ten?

  • On average, we had become smaller by 0.6cm and fatter by 1.6kg.
  • One in four Irish people were on a diet, and we spent almost five hours a day sitting down.
  • 42-inch televisions with surround-sound and dedicated amplifiers.
  • They were entrapping retailers into thinking they were shoplifting, then taking civil cases against the retailers when they were wrongly accused.
  • Ireland was the 18th most corrupt country with an honesty rating of 7.4 out of 10. Iceland, Finland and New Zealand were top at 9.4 out of 10. England was 11th at 8.6 out of 10.
