Irony of Article about Irony of Literacy Report

Ironically, today’s Irish Daily Mail includes two mistakes in an article about the irony of a press release including two mistakes. The article is about the launch of a report on adult literacy. The Dublin Adult Learning Centre included two typos in the emailed invitation – ‘Monday’ was spelled ‘Mondaty’ and ‘Ahern’ was spelled ‘Aherne’. The Mail article highlighted the irony of a group promoting literacy making such a mistake, and asked whether anybody had proof-read the invitation. But inevitably, the Mail article itself included two mistakes: >>>

The Mail article includes the typo:

It about helping people to break down barriers.

And the heading of the Mail article is:

Can NOBODY spell?

Surely this should be one of the following:

  • Nobody can spell
  • Can anybody spell?
  • Can’t anybody spell?

(I really hope I’ve proof-read this post properly.)

Being the person who wrote the doubly ironic article, I would like to take the opportunity to blame a sub-editor for the ‘It’ error. I’m not sure but I have a horrible feeling he took the ‘s out on purpose.
I didn’t write the headline either so my conscience is clear.

I had guessed that, Alan, which is why I referred to the newspaper and not to the writer. And I have missed similar things myself when proofreading over the years. But, you’ve got to admit, this one was funny. đŸ™‚

I did laugh when I read it. It seemed almost inevitable that it would happen. But I honestly think a sub did it for the laugh. It’s a conspiracy I tells you!!!

he is a gay man. Did ye all hear about the time he was accused of rape??? Wouldn’t that be ironic if the Daily mail published it.
