On this week last year (February 4 to February 10, 2007):

  • Why were police in Cork seeking an armed cyclist who had pink smoke and dye trailing from his backpack?
  • Des O’Malley told an RTE programme about Jim Gibbons TD being severely beaten up in 1982 – he was knocked down, kicked in the face and head, then attacked again as he tried to get to his car. What was unusual about the location of the attack?
  • Protesters in County Clare failed to block planning permission for a statue of which actor?
  • Why did the Standards in Public Office Commission call two Killarney Town Councillors before a public hearing?
  • Five years after the end of the Irish Punt, how many Irish punts were still in circulation and had yet to be exchanged for euros?

  • The pink smoke and dye was coming from a security device on a box containing €40,000 in cash that the man had stolen from a security guard making a delivery to a bank.
  • Mr Gibbons was beaten up in the front hall of Leinster House, then again in the car park of Leinster House, by four members of Fianna Fail, because he had voted for Mr O’Malley in a leadership vote against Charles Haughey.
  • Richard Harris.
  • Councillor Patrick O’Donoghue of Fianna Fail and Mayor Shiela Casey of Fine Gael had supported a motion to have lands rezoned belonging to the Gleneagles Hotel Group. In their day jobs, O’Donoghue was managing director of the Gleneagle Hotel Group in Killarney, and Casey was an employee of the Group.
  • About £300 million.
