Fishy Claims of Slimming Pills that Soak up Fat

Update: This advert for Plavsa has now been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland. For more details please click here or else read comment number 120 at the end of this post.

Plavsa Advert

According to a full page ad in this Sunday’s Irish Mail magazine, a ‘Dr. Slausberg from the University of Gotenberg (Sweden)’ has discovered ‘Plavsa, the slimming capsule that soaks up fat’. I have asked the Advertising Authority of Ireland to investigate the claims made for this and related products.

According to the hard-to-find Dr. Slausberg, Plavsa occurs naturally in fish, ‘which is why you never see a fat sea animal.’ I assume the good doctor has never seen a whale. Or a walrus. Or a seal. The ad also says that Plavsa ‘stimulates your digestive system by rapidly eliminating the binded fat molecules’, which sounds to me like a fancy way of saying that it makes you shit a lot more quickly than normal. So, more like a laxative than a slimming pill, perhaps?

The ad then points us to a website, health2udirect.com, where the claims get even fishier. >>>

The Busy Dr. Slausberg

A quick look around health2udirect.com reveals another slimming pill discovered by the prolific Dr. Slausberg. Coincidentally, despite coming from apples instead of fish, Dr. Slausberg’s Lypofene works in exactly the same way as his Plavsa: it dissolves your fatty tissue and eliminates it from your body.

And health2udirect.com also promotes a third ‘pill that soaks up fat’. Lyposorb is promoted with the same sales pitch as Plavsa (‘have you ever seen overweight fish? Of course not, because their bodies contain Lyposorb’.) Strangely, it is not Dr. Slausberg that is promoting this fishy secret. Instead, it is a Dr. Nielsberg!

Similar Endorsements

Coincidentally, the pills are endorsed by two happy slimmers, of the same age and weight loss, using the same language. For Lypofene, ‘Elizabeth McCauley (33), who lost 4 stone in 5 months’ says: ‘I am so happy that Dr. Slausberg has revealed this secret.’ And for Lyposorb, ‘Catherine Kelly (33), who lost 4 stone in 5 months’ says: ‘I am so happy that Dr. Nielsberg has revealed this secret.’

So here is a quick overview. It seems that the elusive Dr. Slausberg discovered Plavsa in fish, and he also discovered Lypofene in apples. Both of these products ‘soak up fat’ (and may, incidentally, make you shit more quickly). So does Lyposorb, which like Plavsa comes from fish and not apples, but this was discovered by a Dr. Nielsberg instead of Dr. Slausberg. Pay attention at the back!

Who is Behind this Advert?

  • The Irish address for Plavsa is 1 Limekiln Close, Terenure, Dublin 6. The Irish orderline is 01 6530765.
  • Apart from ads for the above products, a Google search returned no information on the elusive Doctors Slausberg and Nielsberg.
  • Health2udirect.com is registered to Health First Marketing Ltd, 133 New Bridge Road 10-06, China Town Point, Singapore.
  • The administrative and billing contact is Choices Wild UK Ltd, a web development and hosting company in Middlesex, whose other projects include slimngo.co.uk and (coming soon!) penisinches.co.uk.
  • The print advert says that Plavsa is ‘approved by the International Obesity Society’. A Google search for this group finds this page on Answerbank, in which a poster says they received a promotion for Lyposorb, with the Choices Wild address in Middlesex, this time with a Dr. Spitzer endorsing it.

How to Complain

I have asked the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland to investigate the claims made in these ads under the following clauses in their Code of Standards:

  • 2.10-2.12 regarding the use of statistics and technical data;
  • 2.22 regarding honesty and 2.24-2.26 regarding truthfulness;
  • 2.36-2.40 regarding testimonials and endorsements;
  • 9.1-9.13 regarding slimming products.

You can do the same by visiting their website at www.asai.ie. The more people that raise questions about ads like these, the better.

I have tried these Plavsa capsules since June 2007, when I first saw them in the papers. They are just GREAT. I have since lost 1 stone and do take them regularly to maintain the weight. Good idea to have something I can take when I go out for a meal like pizza. I would recommend any one who really wants to lose that extra bit of weight to try the Plavsa.

I gave two to my goldfish ‘cos he was looking a bit bloated. Apart from becoming more aggressive, I’ve not noticed much difference in his body mass index. Mind you I now have to clean the tank twice a day.

That could be dangerous. Given that the Plavsa supposedly comes from fish, you may have triggered off some cannibalistic trauma in your goldfish. And, when you next clean the tank, he could mistake your fingers for fish fingers, and attack like a shoal of pirhanna. It might be safer to give him the pills that are made from apples

i’m so glad i decided to research this “plavsa” product… in an effort to lose weight the way this ad describes itself as natural is indeed tempting… what put me off is the too obvious “dr. slausberg” it seemed a little “fishy”. thankfully i came across your site and will not be buying this product. i don’t fancy running to the loo all day every day to lose a few pounds!!! thanks again

Hi maria and the others, i have been on plavsa now for 3 weeks, before i mentioned i lost about 4 pounds but it seems to have stoped, iam still at 11 stone 8 pounds, i myself personally iam going to stop taking them, and go back to the one i was on before trim secrets, you have to follow a diet plan on these, of 3 reg meals a day but they give you a boost of energy after a week of taking them, that allows you to work that fat away, i was on thses before, but when your in a rush to lose those few pounds your enclined to look for the other options, i find walking helps on these you can buy these in your health stores as well, they cost 24euro for a month supply.

Just been reading all your comments on Plavsa. I called the orderline and was told €38.00 for 60. This is only 10 days supply at 6 per day. Much better to cut down on the junk food and a little more exercise. All the money you save could give you a nice weekend away. Won’t be be purchasing Plavsa.

Tried the four week course and lost 4lbs. Don’t think this was through the tablets, but rather through the change of lifestyle. Definetly did shit a lot more, I have however found a completely natural slimmimng. It’s called diet and excercise and so far, seems to be working. I would recommend this to a friend.

Bottom line is if you want to lose weight, exercise a little and stay away from bread and any flour based products (ie) biscuits bars and cakes. Garuteen to lose weight and improves your sex life.

cheers, was thinking of trying these but now im not gonna waiste my money no more as the weight is coming off easy thanks to the chemical diet, losing nearly half stone every few days and taking 1-2 days off between, should be my target weight in few weeks after having my baby few months ago.. breakfast of half grapefruit, black coffee or tea, lunch of two boiled eggs and green beans, dinner of 8 ounses of steak , half cup tomateos, lettuce, 1 apple, season with salt , pepper, vineger, only. drink lots of water, repeat, but take a day or two off between, good luck, its seriously works.

I ahve only been on them for 4 days now and I have lost 1.5 pounds. I think they are to good to good to eb true though. Ithought that they were goign to work miracles but Im now beginging to think it all crap, like everythiny else I suppose.

after 2 weeks taking them now i’ve stopped as i’m dizzy a lot of the time and generly dont like the way i’m feeling at the moment, i could put up with this for a while if i felt i was losing weight but i’ve actually put on 2 pounds while taking them and its not cause i’m eating more as i’m eating a lot less as they do supress your appitite a bit so alas its back to the gym unfortunatly there is no easy way to lose weight and if its seems too good to be true it usually is !!

Ladies I ordered this product yesterday and tried to cancel today after reading your comments and the company is very reluctant to give me my money back. I have been sent on a merry go round and after hanging on the phone for half and hour am told I will be not be charged after stating I was on medication and it may be detremental to my health to have side effects as stated above. My partner was in the forces for years and says the only way to stay fit is to eat ‘ lots of healthy’ food and excercise. He says it’s the ‘elexir of youth’. I think I’ll take his advice. So bye bye Mars bars, ice cream and the general ‘pigging out’ we women do.

Ordered Plavsa over 3 weeks ago following seeing the ad in a Sunday Newspaper. Immediately my credit card was debited but I still haven’t received goods. Rang them numerous times & was told that the floods in England have affected delivery!! Emailed too but still no reply. Seem like both a dodgy organisation as well as the product.

I have tried this product. i dont think it is the pill that is making me lose weight though. It makes me go to the toilet a lot more but i could take a Laxitive if i wanted that. (cheaper). It says it must be taken as part of a calorie controlled diet and excercise. You dont have to be a scientist or doctor to figure that out. i will finish the month and see. After reading this page though i think it is a bit dodgy.

I was actually trying to find these pills!my fiancee and i are getting married in 5 weeks and wanted to shift a couple of lbs before the wedding – advert in the magazine said you could find it in your pharmacy, but we looked in several and couldn’t find it so came online to try look for it and found this site!Boy am I glad I did! I can’t believe that it’s so expensive.I have to agree with the girl who pointed out that sea animals like walrus, seals and whales have a significant amount of blubber, I actually mentioned it to my fiancee when I read the advert, but we were going to give it a try anyway – definitly not going to bother now!I like the way it tells you that it will work in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and excercise – sure if we stuck to a calorie controlled diet and exercise alone we’d lose weight – think we’ll just go for that option now – the exercise is free and sticking to a calorie controlled diet will save us money rather than forking out so much for some rendered fish bits!!!

See previous entry above under Nuala. When I cancelled the order they said they would refund the money. I check the bank statement today and they have deducted €67 for the pills. There is no honour amongst thieves. I think the whole idea is just a cash cow for a rich twit who plays on people’s insecurities.

try googling the warrior diet. i really eat like a friggin’ pig sometimes and at least with this one i can still eat like that. seriously if you stick to what it says to do and go to your health food store to get some eostrogen blockers you will lose wieght rather quickly.the website will tell you what to get or you can just buy the creators supplements. i just get the stuff from the health food store. you don’t have to give up up anything really either because honestly, we all know that shit never works anyway.

Checked out BONSAL after reading what bex had said on 15th sept. Well spotted too. The 2 ads are virtually identical. the only differences i can see other than the name is the doc is now carl mayer of the university of zurich and the testimonial ladies names have changed. this is some pile of shit, surely not legal?

Hey, Just readin the comments. Thanks for saving me the hassle with Plavsa. I have tried Lipotrim and YES it does work but my jaws went into shock not being allowed to chew. Drinking milk shakes nearly drove me spare so I gave up. Back to where I started and am now going to investigate Lipotrim. Thanks for the tip and best of luck everyone. Hope we all find the bodies we’re looking for.

Just came accross this site and I am glad that I have as I was going to buy this product. I live in Limerick and have seen all the hype on the papers, so I went to the Alternative health shop in Limerick to price the product last Friday the 28 th of September and I was told that it would cost me euro 39.95 but they had none in stock at the time, however when I rang the store today the had the product in stock but it had increased in price to 49.99 a difference of 10 euros in 2 days. A total rip off!! people stay well clear of it. The old fashioned way is always the best. I find Weight Watchers the best and have lost two stone on the points plan.

I just saw the ad in the paper. Plasva is this thing: the dishonest thing.

Any eejit can tell you why fish aren’t that fat. It’s because they don’t stuff themselves at McDonalds every day. Duh.

Maybe Plasva gives a little psychological boost, but for me, I’ll stick with my dodgey ab trainer and Tesco brand weightlifting kit. 😉

HI ! I HAVE BEEN ON 6 PLAVSA A DAY FOR THE PAST WEEK. AS YET HAVE LOST ONLY A FEW POUNDS AND HAVE BEEN
USING THE TOILET DAILY. BEFORE THE TABS I MAY ONLY GO EVERY SECOND DAY. MY TUMMY FEELS OUT OF SORTS AT TIMES. I.II FINISH THE BOTTLE SINCE I,VE ALREADY PAID 30 EURO FOR THEM AND LET YE KNOW IF THEY WORKED FOR ME OR NOT.
AS FOR LIPOTRIM IT WORKS BUT THEN AGAIN IF YOUR LIVING ON 3 SHAKES A DAY .. WATER AND BLACK TEA .. ANYONE WILL LOOSE THE POUNDS. I LOST 2 AND HALF STONE IN A MATTER OF WEEKS .. MY BODY WENT INTO SHOCK AND MY HAIR STARTED TO FALL OUT BIG TIME.
IT TOOK ME ABOUT 12 WEEKS BEFORE MY HAIR STOPPED FALLING OUT AND THE WEIGHT CAME BACK ON.

Hi there I’ve been reading the comments above and would like to offer some general advice:

FIrstly if you are over 16stone and are having problems losing weight you should consult your doctor and they are obliged to offer you weight controlling drugs….proper clinically trialed drugs as described here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_Pills

Secondly please read about each drug individually as all have there side effects. The most recent drug available in the Europe, UK & Ireland is this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rimonabant

It would probably be the best one if the side effects might only occur in small percentages as with most drugs. Consulting with your doctor though and more independent research will help you decide.

Apart from that there is no substitute for exercise and eating right and this is the best method in the end with the most beneficial side effects…..exercise can become addictive and can make you feel good.

The other option and certainly the more expensive one is liposuction which is a very safe surgery. The downside of course is that you haven’t changed your habit and therefore you will grow the fat back, and you have not improved your health.

Apologies for the Wiki links but it was more convenient that medical journals and available free to all.

    Good Luck,

    DK

I lost 4 stone in 5 months on a product from Tony Quinn health store..called Amino – 0r / Energise. It is 100% natural, no drugs..

Only side effect is buying new clothes..wait until you reach your desired weight as I kept buying thinking that this was it but no I lost bucket loads and loo trips were not ott as with plavsa.. which may only work for Pisceans..or merpeople..

Bought Plavsa back in October and took 4 perday, I didnt lose any weight and did not experience any side effects whatsoever. I do think the capsule could have been filled with talcum powder for all the difference it made! My local health store claim they don’t promote it, as unlike Chitosan, Plavsa depletes all fats from the body including the good ones such as omega 3 and essential fats!! Plavsa did not shift 1 ounce of fat good or bad………….

I also got spots on my stomach area! I reckon anything that can stop your periods like that is extremely dodgy so i recommend to STAY AWAY from Plavsa

I ate exactly what i did before and changed nothing about my lifestyle. Everyone has noticed the difference in me. I think its very true to stick it for the 4 wks cos you will really see the difference and cant believe that they are reasonably priced. Ive read unsuccessful stories but maybe they affect people differently i dunno but they have definatley worked for me so I would highly recommend them ;o)

I also don’t find that I need to go to the toiliet more. Maybe we feel better about spending money on diet pills to stick to a diet…. ither way I do find the advertisement is very misleading and Plasva should’nt be sold in pharmacys until their approved.

I’ve been getting my plasva tablets in the Ultimate Health Clinic in Limerick for the last 2 weeks, they only charge €30 for 60 capsules (the cheapest and best around) you dont just get tablets handed over counter like other places, they give you advice and information on healthy eating. They take a personal interest in each individual and they watch your progress on a week-week basis. The girls are brilliant and motivate you, they are very professional but extremely friendly. So i would recommended anyone to contact the Ultimate Health Clinic. They also have clinic in Athy, Kildare and Ratoath, Meath so no excuses! They specialize in Colonic Hydrotherapy and I’m just after having my first session with them, which will guarantee me to lose weight and feel great! Amazing!

I’ve been working in community pharmacy now since 1979. In that time I’ve seen loads of “wonder” weight loss products come and go. There has yet to be one to last the course. The claims have been from fat dissolving , fat binding, metabolism boosting to meal replacement. As outlined above they are all based on flaky pseudo-science. They all seem to be based on “getting the most money from gullible punters” principle.
A lot of people are looking for an easy answer to all of their problems, weight loss included. They are ready to believe the “Take this tablet and you will lose weight” ads. Life ain’t that easy.
Eat less and healthy and exercise more, that’s the secret. You can send your €20 notes to me at the above address. 🙂
There are some appetite suppressants available on prescription but they are not suitable for everybody and are only for a short while. When you finish them you still have to deal with your pre-existing eating habits.

I took Plavsa during the summer and lost half a stone…was really happy with them. Though at the same time i gave up sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks. Have started to take them again with no results. AT ALL. Conclusion….Plavsa doesn’t work…cutting out the fatty foods does. I would suggest kepping a diary of what you eat every day for a normal week (if it passed my lips it gets written down, that included drinks), I didn’t realise how much junk I was eating til I gave it up. Which was hard but I feel and look better now. As a rule il never “treat” myself two days running and it can only be one small thing. That way I’m never too restricted.

PS: Am a bit more hungry and definately noticed I’m goin to the loo more often while on them.
PPS: I’ve heard diet drinks make you gain more weight because the sweetener in them upsets your biochemistry and you gain weight more easily because of that.

Update – Advert for Plavsa Slimming Pills is Now Banned

Since I published this post in July, it has consistently been the most-read and most-commented-on post on That’s Ireland.

The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland has now upheld the complaints against this advert, and has told the advertisers not to make these claims again until full substantiation has been submitted to and verified by the Authority.

I also investigated this product further since July, and sent the following new information to the ASAI before they decided on the matter:

    * The advert is one of several related adverts that use identical wording for seemingly the same product under different brand names, stretching at least as far back as 2000 in the USA.

    * The supposed inventor of Plavsa is bogus. There is no Doctor Slausberg at the University of Gothenburg, and no record of him in their marine-related theses from as far back as 1960.

    * The testimonials in the Plavsa advert are bogus. They repeat word-for-word, using different names, testimonials from related adverts in other countries, one as old as 2002.

    * The active ingredient in Plavsa is chitosan, which has a controversial history as a slimming aid, including a different company making a $10m settlement for deceptive advertising in the USA.

I have posted the full story about what I discovered here.

i find it really good, it stops you from putting on weight when your bold and helps you lose weight faster when your good.

Hi people, was going to buy this product but after reading all the comments above decided not to. I know how i gained weight, lack of exercise and eating and drinking the wrong foods. So i guess the best way to lose it is to turn the tables and do more exercise and eat the right healthy foods and drink lots of water. its as simple as that. I would like to wish everyone of you who are trying to lose weight the best of luck and remember you can do it.

I have been going to the loo a lot more, not happy about that as I have IBS and this is irritating it further. Think I’m gonna stop, am scared about all the comments I’ve read on this forum. Pity, coz I’m getting married in June and really wanted to shift 3 stone. Have tried to exercise and eat healthily for the last year but find it very hard to stick to – oh well, will try again. Since then I have lost 8lbs. I had no side effects at all. I did not change my diet while on Plavsa so I really think they worked for me.

Patrick – yes, the ad is back. They have slightly changed the wording.

    See details here.

I’ll be checking with the Advertising Standards Authority about this tactic and I’ll post more when I get a response.

Hi there, I have bought 4 packs of Plasva, been taking them for 2 weeks, and have no weight loss. With all the comments I am thinking that I should stop taking them. However, some people say that you only notice the weight loss after a month on Plasva. Can anyone support this. And if not, can we not get our money back from anywhere…… Maybe we are stupid buying these things, but there should be some come back if they are a scam>>>

I wrote to ASAI about the fact the poster is on display in a chemist window. They replied

” I refer to your recent email dated 04th February 2008 concerning point-of-sale posters displayed for Plavsa in the window of a chemist.

The function of the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland is to promote the highest standards of advertising and to enforce the Code of Standards for Advertising, Promotional and Direct Marketing in Ireland.

For the purposes of the Code, an advertisement is defined as a paid-for communication in which the advertiser purchases space in an advertising medium (e.g. newspaper, magazine, radio, television, etc.) to communicate a commercial message. Point-of-sale material would not normally be regarded as an advertisement for the purposes of the Code and would therefore be outside the jurisdiction of ASAI.

Although we are not in a position to pursue your complaint under the Code, we appreciate that you took the trouble to write to us in this case. ”

    Kindest Regards

The advert is still on the chemist window. The ASAI told me they had sent a copy of their report to the chemist

Further to my post 133 on March 21 2008 I can now confirm the poster has been taken down from that chemist. I have a photo of it when it was up.

The ASA told me they have no power over point of sale ads but would be writing to the chemist, enclosing a copy of the ruling as far as I can recall.

I note it has also been taken down from another local chemist which is a Unicare branch

tried it for 6 weeks and i am very disappointed with the out come, i lost only 1 pound, i feel as though these pills are a good source of fibre, i also feel that they get rid of the bloated feeling but they did nothing for weight at all, i wouldn’t advise anyone to buy them, they are hopeless

There are very little comments saying how good these diet pills were. The few that there is, i think it is DR.Slausburg in disguise. Plavsa has given me great HOPE, but, now I guess all that hope is lost:(

I came across a fat fighter called slimlike recently, and in that website they actually show you the evidence the proof that it does work.

Why dont all the other weight loss sites show the evidence the proof, if it works there should be evidence or proof, what have they got to hide, makes sense right?

    its http://www.slimlike.co.uk/clinical-studies.aspx

Hey i took plavsa when they first came out in about March 2007 they worked brill for me took them for 2 weeks and the weight just vanished. Stopped taking them a few months later and slowly but surely the weight piled back on i am now at my heavievst at 13 stone but i am also taking hrt. I am only 20 so i believe that the HRT is making me pile on the weight dont get me wrong i have a very sweet tooth lol… Started taking plavsa again for the 3rd or 4th time and they are doing nothing for me.. pure waste of money. I believe they make you lose the weight the first time round but they dont have the same effect 3rd or 4th time round… Just finished my plavsa today and i have lost nothing. Looks like im back to the drawing board again.. has anyone actually tried anything that has worked would be really interessed in hearing how you got on..

naturally like your web site but you need to check the spelling on quite a few of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to tell the reality on the other hand I will certainly come again again.

You actually make it seem so easy along with your
presentation but I find this topic to be actually something which I
believe I might never understand. It kind of feels too complicated
and extremely huge for me. I am looking ahead for
your subsequent publish, I will attempt to
    get the cling of it!

enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any tips for inexperienced blog writers? I’d certainly appreciate it.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear
and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off
topic but I had to tell someone!
